What is microsuction ear wax removal?
Microsuction is a modern method of removing excess ear wax using a small, gentle suction device while viewing the ear canal with specialist magnification.
Unlike traditional ear syringing, no water is used during the procedure. This makes microsuction a clean, precise and highly effective way of removing ear wax.
It is widely regarded as the gold-standard method of professional ear wax removal and is recommended by ear care professionals.
Does microsuction hurt?
Most people find microsuction comfortable and experience little or no discomfort.
You may hear a gentle suction noise during the procedure, and some patients notice a tickling sensation, particularly if the wax is very close to the eardrum.
Occasionally, if the ear is inflamed or the wax is particularly hard, the treatment may feel slightly uncomfortable, but Jennie will explain each step and work at a pace that's comfortable for you.
Should I use olive oil before my appointment?
n many cases, using olive oil ear drops for a few days before your appointment can help soften ear wax, making it easier to remove.
However, this isn't always necessary. If you book an appointment, we'll let you know whether we recommend using ear drops beforehand based on your individual circumstances.
Please don't use ear drops if you've been advised not to, have recently had ear surgery or have a suspected perforated eardrum unless instructed by a healthcare professional.
Can ear wax affect my hearing?
Yes. Excess ear wax can block the ear canal and reduce the amount of sound reaching the eardrum, causing temporary hearing loss or muffled hearing.
Once the blockage has been removed, many patients notice an immediate improvement in their hearing.
If hearing difficulties continue after ear wax removal, further hearing assessment may be recommended.
What is included in an ear health check?
An ear health check includes a careful examination of the ear canal and outer ear using specialist equipment.
This allows Jennie to assess the overall health of your ears, identify visible concerns and provide reassurance where appropriate.
If further investigation or treatment is recommended, this will be explained clearly during your appointment.
Which areas do you cover?
Our clinic is based in Winchcombe, and we welcome patients from across the surrounding area, including:

Our mobile service also covers many of these locations.
How do I book an appointment?
Booking an appointment is simple.
You can contact Cotswold Ear Care by phone, email or by completing the online booking form on our website.
Whether you choose to visit our clinic in Winchcombe or book a mobile appointment in Cheltenham or the surrounding Cotswolds, we'll do our best to offer you an appointment as quickly as possible.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book an appointment with Cotswold Ear Care directly without seeing your GP first.
Many people choose private ear care because it allows them to access treatment quickly without waiting for an NHS appointment. If, during your appointment, we feel you would benefit from further medical assessment, we'll explain your options and can access specialist ENT advice or recommend the most appropriate next steps.
Is microsuction safe?
Yes. Microsuction is considered one of the safest methods of professional ear wax removal when performed by a trained practitioner.
Because the procedure is carried out under direct visual guidance, ear wax can be removed accurately while avoiding unnecessary contact with the delicate structures inside the ear.
Jennie has over 25 years of NHS experience, and every appointment is carried out carefully with your comfort and safety as the priority.
How long does an appointment take?
Most appointments take between 30 and 45 minutes.
This allows time to discuss your symptoms, examine your ears, carry out treatment if required and provide aftercare advice.
Appointment times may vary depending on the amount of ear wax present and whether one or both ears require treatment.
What symptoms can ear wax cause?
A build-up of ear wax can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
- Blocked ears
- Muffled or reduced hearing
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Ear discomfort or pressure
- A feeling of fullness in the ear
- Hearing aid feedback
- Difficulty hearing conversations
These symptoms can often be relieved quickly with professional ear wax removal.
Do you offer hearing checks?
Yes.
We provide hearing checks for adults and children aged 6 years and over.
A hearing check helps assess your hearing levels and identify whether further investigation may be beneficial.
If required, Jennie can arrange access to a free hearing test with an audiologist.
Do you offer home visits?
Yes.
Cotswold Ear Care provides a mobile ear care service for patients across Winchcombe, Cheltenham and many surrounding areas within the Cotswolds.
Home visits are ideal for people with limited mobility, busy schedules or anyone who simply prefers to receive treatment in the comfort of their own home.
If you're unsure whether we cover your area, please get in touch.
What happens if you find something other than ear wax?
Not every ear problem is caused by ear wax.
If Jennie identifies anything that requires further investigation, she'll explain what she's found and advise on the most appropriate next steps.
Where appropriate, she can access specialist ENT advice and guidance and recommend referral to an audiologist or your GP if additional assessment is needed.
